Tested: 5 Free PDF Translation Methods — Here Is the Ranking
Last week I helped a friend translate a 15-page English contract. Five "free" methods tested. The results surprised us — the zero-cost option was not actually the cheapest.
Methodology
Same 15-page English commercial contract. Five methods, four scoring dimensions: quality, layout, speed, free tier limits.
Results
| Method | Quality | Layout | Speed | Free Limit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| PDFTranslate Free | 8.0 | 8.5 | Fast | 200 pages/mo |
| Google Translate upload | 7.0 | 1.0 | Fast | Unlimited |
| DeepL Free | 8.5 | 1.0 | Fast | Unlimited |
| Manual copy-paste | 8.0 | 0 | Very slow | Unlimited |
| LibreOffice + MT | 7.5 | 3.0 | Slow | Unlimited |
Layout Preservation: The Real Differentiator
Google Translate and DeepL Free score 7-8.5 on quality. But layout preservation is near zero — tables become plain text, two-column layouts collapse.
The Free Tier Trap
PDFTranslate Free 200 pages/month covers most people. But 500 pages in one go means 300 pages paid. LibreOffice-then-MT looks zero cost but format corruption runs ~70%, and fixing it costs more time than it saves.
